The keys for my 1983 mini, one for the ignition and the other for doors/boot, have been lost/stolen, I suspect the latter. At one time, you could take your car to a chap with a large bunch of keys but, sadly, he exists no longer. Removal of the ignition lock has faclitated driving. Does anyone know, how I can obtain new keys? Should one exist, a vin database would be magic.

Thanks,

squirrl.

Hello & welcome to the forum:) Best bet is to change the locks you can get a chrome door & boot handle set for about £30 then try to get hold of a steering rack from an old mini with the ignition key barrel and everything else attached (M&M`s in warrington can help you with one of them)and swap em over there are other ways of doing it but it think thats the easiest way. Getting in the boot can be abit trickey but if your replacing the locks you can give them some stick. can try these peeps http://www.triple-c.com/Keys_For_British_Cars.cfm

As deano says getting into the car might be a bit of an issue but if you are near anyone with another mini their keys will prob open it too! i've opened charlie with the keys to 'mini_mini' and even the keys to my grandads '63! the keys fit but might take a bit of a wobble to open the boot! atleast you'll be able to get in and change the locks tho... shiny door locks look sweet too! :D good luck!

Yes, I came across this many years ago. At the time I had a mini van and opened and sat in someone else's mini van, identical to mine, in a large car park in Stoke. Of course, I realised the moment I sat down and got out looking very sheepish but thanks for the thought.

Further to your nice piece of lateral thinking, it occurs to me that there may be a scrapyard in the Chester/N.Wales area that keeps a load of keys. Does anyone know of such a gold-mine?

A look inside a door revealed the key number. A locksmith constructed a new key for the ignition. Many thanks for your suggestions and help.
