SIRS
Well what a barsteward of a week had a young lad drop by last week asking me to rebuild his brakes as DER CRAP MATE his words well DE WERE CRAP
front brakes where sheits back wheels just locked up and the car would go into a spin NOT NICE ON THE UNDERCRACKER FRONT!
So being a soft touch and giving him a knowing laugh I said" hah easy peezy mate give a couple of days sonny ILE give yah a bell heres a lollipop of you go"
Got the car in the shop and started to take off all the drums front and rear
replaced ALL brake flexy pipes front and rear, replaced ALL front and rear wheel cylinders, replaced ALL brake shoes
Wiped my hands to admire this GLEAMING rebuid I had just completed and started to BRING FORTH THE EASY BLEED connected the bleed up and started in the correct sequence bled the last cylinder and with that daft awful knowing laugh went to press the brake pedal WOOSH FLOORBOARD TIME PEEPS! yes no brakes
So using my FAMOUS front brake bleed trick clamped down BOTH the front wheel cylinders onto the shoes so I could get the air out as per DONS MINITECH SITE did this several times NO BRAKES
So now ime lost in a sea of sheite I rembered speaking to DENOS DAD about his cracked drum so I preplaced Both drums and again NO BRAKES
By now the valium bottle is trembling in my hand whiskey bottle and fag in the other hand I start going into the Twilight zone of engineering
I then looked at the brakes again and noticed the wheel cylinder pistons where a long way from the shoe and had to travel upto the adjuster piont before lifting the shoe into contact with the drum excesive travel I thought
equals excsesive pedal travel
I then look at the little behive springs holding the shoes to the piston ends you know they hook into the little hole and pull the shoe end against the drum well they should move the piston with the shoes in close contact and guess what? THEY WERNT so after closer examination I notice a prong sticking out of the spring in the same direction as the hook end this prong should fit in the same hole as the hook shaft and hodls the piston TIGHT onto the drum so when you adjust the brakes the piston moves with the shoe eliminating excesive travel bingo BRAKES! just add this to your arsenal of fixes and if you have crappy drum brakes(Graham) check out that these little springs are fitted correctly or indeed if they are fitted at all
cheers

nice one general sir! never nice to be in the twilight zone! especially when you're moving at the time you realise your brakes have gone!
cheers!
