Hi I,m a newbie, got a 1973 850 been completely restored but 6the crankshaft snapped. Aqiured a 1990 1000 metro engine just done 34000, but on taken the engine/gearbox out notice that it has pot joints whilst the 850 has a hardy spicer which are different size drive shafts. can i just swap the diffs over and use the hard spicer drive?
any help appreciated

Cheers
Jim

Hi jimsinn not a 100% sure but going back many years if my mind serves me right i dont think the diffs will interchange and if you change gearboxes the 1000 crankshaft catches the casing onthe 850 box and side of the box have to be machined as i say not 100% SURE SO MAYBE ANOTHER WAY AROUND IT hope this helps a little Merv

Can't you just remove the CV joints and swap them over at that end? or am I missing something?

trickey one:confused: i think you will find the gear linkages are different too ?also starter &flywheel can be different sometimes its best to change the engine and subframe in one complete unit let us know how you get on

if you use the pot type drive shafts they should fit onto the outers of the old ones i think will have a look in garage tomorow but in sure gear linkages will need changing to.

I'd be suprised if it fitted with Hardys. More likely to be maltees cross joints. Have they rubber or nylon inserts?

Hardys were only fitted to S's standard so maybe someone retro-fitted them.

If only the crank is sanpped and no swarf has damaged the box. Just swap the block onto the old box. There will be no clearance problems.

That way you'll keep the right gearing for the speedo and if it is fitted with a majic wand box (some were at that year). you won't need to hack the shell.
