Busterb1993
21-03-2010, 09:45 AM
i had them from magnum panels, im just worried about welding them in so the car doesnt crab thats all.

Busterb1993
24-03-2010, 07:25 PM
today , i came to take off the rear subframe to weld on the new mount panels , how ever i couldnt get the bolts undone so i gave them a good squirt of wd40 and set about the drivers sill. To make my life easy the pervious owner had put a blob of weld at each end and then fillered and whever else the rest of the way,the worrying thing is when i bought it he told me it had been fully resored by a professional :S haha. I will try and get some pictures up soon but my camera was dead today so i couldnt get any .

when i was stripping down one of my projects, i found all manner of really really bad repairs.....
the sills had been 'repaired' by filling them with expanding foam filler, cutting it flat, and then covering with seam sealer... !
the flitch panels were repaired with a peice of cardboard, held in place with filler, then the filler had been 'beaded' by hand around the edges to make it look like it was covering a weld!
and the whole front end had been 'welded' on with arldyt!!
as i was doin it i was hoping they were all 'quick fixes' for an MOT by a 17year old who'd never touched a car before...
then i found the recipt for the work 'rust repair' from a proper garage!!
then i felt sorry for the guy - all that cost him 850 quid!!

Busterb1993

i feel for the poor person who got robbed haha. i think i have about ended my serch for rust now and hopefull it will be off to the body shop soon to be painted :)

so today i came to taking off the rear subframe , attempt number 2 ... i then found out that the bolts was tight in becuase the "professional" previous owner has replaced the sills and in doing so welded up the back of 2 bolts , so i resorted to breaking things as after all i am replacing those panels :)

well no more progress since the last picys as birtish weather has got the best of me :( how ever this has lead me to find an aim in building my mini ... make it faster than a friends evo 9 . I think this is a do-able task , if the cammed r1 engine alone doesnt cut it i have been talking to a nice fellow who makes custom bike turbo kits and he has told me he will nock me one up for about £1500 :) and he can forge the engine for a further £800 which includes a full engine overhall not just rod's and piston's and he is think around the 350-450 horse power depending on how well it can put it down .

yesterday i managed to get a few jobs done :) , the rear subframe mount panel wedling in the drivers floor is cut and reay to be welded in the boot is welded up on one side and the inner sill is tacked on the drivers side next job is get the floor welded in so i can finish welding the inner sill in and then it can have the outer sill to :) hopefully today... how ever the bad news is my friend with the evo has got word of my plan and took a trip to scooby clinic and had a bigger half on his turbo, bigger boost solinoid , ally front mount and then remap to 400 hp at the wheels. so it looks like im going to have to get saving and turbo mine :)

11-04-2010, 10:53 PM
well my phone wont let me upload pictures any more sorry people so when i get that sorted or find the charger for the camera ill get some more pictures up for you lot :) .
update on the mini any way , its currently back on its floor pan again having the drivers a panel fitted and then thats the last of the work on the drivers side , well other than smoothing out there little dints here and there !! i do need some new doors though and i was thinking about going for the fibreglass ones and i was wondering if any one had any experience with them ? a friend bought some a while back and they was a mile away from fitting how ever i dont know where he had them from or if his mini is even square as he has replaced the whole floor. So any help on that area would be nice. and some more good news . i am ordering the subframe from promotive this week so i have 4 weeks to pull my finger out and get the passenger side done ( inner and outer sill , rear floor in the very corner where the roll cage will sit and the A panel) so hope fully it will look like a mini again soon and ill do my best to get you some pictures :)

Busterb1993
19-04-2010, 08:04 AM
sorry i havent updated for a while , i had a little accident where the tool in the die grinder snapped and hit me in the eye so i have been bed bound for a while to make sure the preasure in my eye doesnt change as it caused an internal bleed and they didnt want my eye 2 clog up . any how today is my last day hopefully , i will find out later on with a visit to the hospital, dont know when i will get on with the mini again though as i still cant see much out of one eye . how ever in my bored time i did contact pro motive and ordered my conversion :) so its not all bad :)

went 2 the hospital today , the scratches are healting how ever there is a problem with the bleeding in my ee still so i am bed bound for another week :( although my sight is cumming back just every thing is really bright and i look like i have been drugged up becuase my pupil is huge . ill try and get a picture for you all and a picture of what hit my eye :) but he said in a few weeks ill be back to 100% vision hopefully

so after my little problem with my eye im finaly back to work to find my internet is broken therefor i cant keep you guys updated , so bt have finished pull out every excuse and finaly got me back online, as for the eye well its better , but vision is lost as where the eyeball got scratched it has left a scar so it may or may not get better , and i have for some reason one massive pupil but trying to understand a doctor called mr hussen that claims he is german is not easy , but any way to the mini , well since i have had no internet to keep me busy i turned to trhe mini on every spare and bored second . the shell in its self is now soild pritty much , all i have left to do is the scuttle corner and the rear quater corner and then off she will go to the body shop .i had to buy a new rear subframe as the old one had been attacked by the best bodger ever , becuase well im sure filler doesnt hold metal together and way that came the other day , and pro motive contacted me this morning to tell me that the front subframe is back from powder coat and they are just finishing off the diff so in a few weeks she should be rolling :) , any way i have loads of pictures so ill get them up now if i can if not tomorrow .

Busterb1993

Busterb1993

yeh ill try and remeber to take a few pictures of that for you all , not as simple as it looks to fit then engine in the frame , but its a challange , and well we all like them :) and just to make it more fun its ment to be in the body shop in 12 days , think that dead line may be broken since i still have the passenger sill and both A panels to fit and the subframe , wiring , radius arms , fuel lines , fuel tank , brake lines and a lot more no doubt

the kit cost me £3250 i think , sorry for late replys i have been away for a few weeks .. any way i get back to a small problem , i am round to fitting the shafts and hubs and so on , but i am upgrading to the metro turbo brakes does this mean i need metro turbo hubs so the disc will clear ? could do with knowing asap as i only have till november to get her on the road !!!

Brumski
11-08-2010, 03:04 PM
Use the Turbo disks, drive flangs and calipers fitted to Mini hubs.
BUT... you need to use ERA turbo caliper bolts - available from Minispares. These have an Imperial thread and a metric shank to seat the caliper correctly.

Then you just need the conversion brake hose kit available from many of the Mini suppliers.

Busterb1993
12-08-2010, 08:35 PM
thats great cheers i just went to fit it all up and the disc was rubbing on the hub so i wasnt sure if it was the disc or the hub :) i have the rest as it came as a kit "ready to fit" without every thing you need haha , where is the best place to get the drive flanges ?

forgot to take my camera with me today but my god these lads dont mess about , the car has been fully stripped of paint as the last owner sprayed it with rattle cans and they dont think there paint will stick to well. also today i got the old battery tray cut off and a plate welded on passenger sill is on scuttle corner repaired and rear valance is ready to be welded on tomorrow , then we will bolt up the front subframe and get the flip front fitted up and A panels welded on , is there an easy way to go about lining these up ? or is it just bye eye ? , also i need a drivers door if any one has one for sale ?

promotive kit? nice I have always thought it was a neat solution, you have two rear seats and dont need to chop 1/2 your mini away.

about the rear seats ... there kind of full of rollcage and i did slightly chop her up just to save weight :) more pictures on the way soon as she is flying together and i cant wait to have a play :)

Have you tried Miniworld magazine website they have a whole section dedicated to mini wheels and the different types

Busterb1993
09-09-2010, 10:29 PM
so i have found out the wheels are KN Mercurys , have never heard of them before and i cant find much about them on the internet , are they a worth while investment ? they seem pritty rare as when i did find out any thing it was people on other forums looking for some how ever most the thread were old , any advice ?

ROADRUNNER
10-09-2010, 06:38 AM
These wheels are very hard to find and if you get them for the right price I would buy them, there was a set of these at the Malvern show last year and they fetched £180 (wheels only) and they were in a poor condition really, the wheels are Mercurys they also did Jupitors amongst others as they named all their wheels after planets

Busterb1993
11-09-2010, 09:20 PM
i think he wants £50 for them , although i have had to tell him that they are for my car as he wouldnt be best pleased with me making money on them haha , i think ill get them off him then , where is a good place to sell them and get the right money ?

ROADRUNNER
11-09-2010, 10:39 PM
I take a lot of stuff to the shows and put it in front of the car on the club stand, sold £140 of parts last week at Uttoxeter and will try and do the same tomorrow at Stanford otherwise try and sell on club forum websites that gets good results plenty of websites out there

im not to sure , im waiting on the wiring still think it must be delayed in post . Any way its going for brake lines over the next few days as my mates garage is closed and he wants something to do :L . so after that its little bits and pieces , still waiting on the lad painting the front and doors as he doesnt have a proper booth and he says it is to cold , but im not in a massive rush as i dont think she will be too good in snow if im honest :L , and i also want the grit to wear off the roads a little bit because i dont want to see a few thousand and a years work rot away !!!!

Ayup fella nice project, its coming on a treat well done.
While looking at your last photos I noticed that the calipers "may" be on the wrong side as it looks like the bleed nipples are at the bottom (there sided)
I tried to blow the photo up to take a closer looky but it went a wee bit fuzzy to be 100%
If they are on the wrong side youd never be able to get all the air out .I also noticed that the conversion link pipes on the calipers are slighty diffrent each side it "may" cause an issue as it "may" touch the CV boot on full lock.??? or even be an mot failure.
Let us know mate, better to be safe than sorry.
keep us updated on the progress

i had been wondering about the bleed nipples actually how ever there is 2 nipples per caliper , one on top and one underneith :S i couldnt get my head round this and as for the link pipe i was playing around with them see which way fitted best as with it forward its trying to kink , how ever i think with fluid in them and up to preasure they should be ok , but they do just clear the cv gator , thanks for your concern ill try and get a better picture of the brakes see what you make of it ? cheers

Four pots should (or normally lol) have 3 bleed nipples,2 each side and 1 on the top.
As i say if there on oppisite sides youll never get the air out and the pedel will feel propper poo lol...

regards the pipes some testers are proper gimps with these, dont give em any exccuse to fail it, make sure theres plenty of room

so , wnet for a drive the other day ... before it broke :L , and its the 1st time i had really give it some ( the guy behind me in his bmw was sat close enhough to get a lift ! and couldnt stop looking to overtake in a 30 !!) so any way i put my foot down up the straight and when i got to about 75 if not a little les it became very skittish , how ever if changed up and it wasnt hard acceration it wasnt so bad , so im confussed as to why its doing this , some one has told me the wheels , but if it is then well i dont see why any one would possibly want to run 13" , all the camber and tracking is set , how ever i am aware it crabs slightly as when i welded the rear subframe panel on it a few mm out is this likely to be my problem ? how would i get round this without dropping my whole subframe ? , any advice would be great as im begining to lose my patients and say sod it and put it in storagetill i find an answer ... this is not what i want but its stressing me lol ,

regards karl

Have you had the geometry set up by laser alignment, there is a very good place in Llandudno Junction, Reuben in our club had his done there and it was a different car, before he had it done it was uncontrolable between 50 - 70 mile per hour and he was running 13's
