i have'nt attempted anything like this before.

hi mate, any ideas what part of your engine has ceased? - was nippy running with no oil in it?
best thing to do if you havn't done anything like that before is a haynes manual, socket set, screwdrivers and the biggest hammer you can find! that usually sorts most things!
try this site, seems quite ok for tech stuff

hello lads

thanks deno for the info on getting my pics on....i have took some, i'll get them on as soon as i can.

thank you charlie mini for the advice and support.
the car was running fine with with plenty oil etc.... i parked up after returning from the welsh mountain zoo and she would'nt start up again, i did all the usual checks and was very supprised to find that the engine had ceased.
i've got the manual mate... the big hammer is out and has seen some action already.... and that site is good, cheers.

i hope to have the engine out by tommorow night 03/09/06. then it's back to work for a rest.... can't wait to look inside to find out what has happened.

i dont know what im looking for though, hopfully it will be obvious.

if you want to see the pic in the post above....... you can now do so.

the engine is still in the car to date 05/09/06... not much is coming off easy, but it is coming off (see big hammer in the pic (nicknamed garth)) nippy is teaching me loads and i have made up some new swear words..
.. it's all good in the hood though.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k132/alexm_007/DSCN4052.jpg

i'm getting exited about lifting the engine out and the posabilitys for making nippy even better than she was. any ideas? all are welcome.

poor lil nippy! its a very nice colour tho! what kind of speed were you looking at? and how much you got to spend? is it stage 1's?
a stage 3 head, kent cams and a new carb needle and dizzy would make it unstoppable! but they all come at a price! :( every silver lining has a cloud!

@lex
05-09-2006, 08:56 PM
hey moddimad, charlie mini

question: what do you call a french man who wears sandles all the time ?

answer: phileep fulop.

i'm not going to put an old engine from the scrap yard in her, i'd like to have some reliability and yes, some proformance is a must. the engine that's still in is a 1275 mpi, so if its an injection is the carb needle and dizzy ? still an option. like i said i've never done anything like this before. i can't aford the £3300.00 i was quoted for a drive in drive out replacement from mini sport + i'm just too tight.
building the new engine to my own spec would be great but again im not that confident. i dont know i might have to give it a go. keep the suggestions coming and any fashion tips would be appretiated also.

hello people

the stencilling on the windows is my baughter's handy work. they do look like
x-rays.... ha ha.... i like that.

yeh i love the colour too.... nippy is tahiti blue, been told the code is jmp (blvc65). please tell me if im wrong. i am bit worried about getting a colour match and blending the random patches where she needs touched up.... ooh er mrs.

the engine is not out yet deano..... blumin'eck. i'm not pit crew.
it took me one evening to get the exaust of man :) . i did'nt realise there were three bolts  , i had only released the two which were visable.. duuur :o .

i am off work until saturday 9/9/06 and if my mate turns up with a A-frame, it will be out soon. i do'nt know whats going back in ?
i do'nt want to be doing this again in the near future.

So what stage you @ now....

I rebuilt my engine (also an MPI) last winter. Well I say I, I mean my lovely bf!!
We rebored it to a 1293 and put a sportier cam in it (dont ask me which one, coz i have no idea!) and some omega forged pistons which had been dished out if that makes sense. It already had a stage one kit on it.

Other than that I think a staged head would be good too... or a mapable ECU if u've got loads o dosh to spent!!

PS Sorry if I haven't been on in a while, I've just moved house and am interneless for the while... but I still love you all!!

No worries. Nice to hear the latest update from south wales :) Hopefully we should have our Open Classic on the road next year. Will try and get Dean to upload some pics of what it looks like now. Should be a massive transformation when she is done. Poor Polo (the car with a hole) has been paintless, wheelless, engineless, and webasto roofless for ages. Needs some serious TLC and lots of money spent. Doh :)

hi ya babybek

i have taken everything out of the engine bay exept the break servo thing, i'm not sure about doing that. maybe i could get the engine passed it ? i am waiting for a mate to borrow me his trolley jack so's i can get her of the ramps and onto the axel stands, in order to take the wheels off and then remove the drive shaft.

thanks for your input.... thats just the kind of thing i'm looking for. the plan is to do the work myself and spend on quality stuff, so she's the dogs what'sit's. unfortunately i have'nt got a clue and am learning as i go.

hope you are settled into your knew home ok now and hey.... we all love you right back.

just a quick update

my mate is having car problems of his own right now.

i have done what i can on my own, so i'm left twiddling my thumbs and looking @ the pics of you all getting out and about (can you hear violins ?).

Deano
20-09-2006, 09:41 PM
with an spi its easyier to drop the engine and subframe down thru the bottom as lifting it past the servo is trickey and needs to be removed meaning that you need to beled all the brakes:)
cheers Deano

@lex
21-09-2006, 07:24 PM
Yeh, your right deano,

it does'nt matter if you lift the engine out or leave it on the sub frame and lift the car, you have got to bleed the breaks because the servo is in the way one way and the break lines are attached to the sub frame stoping you lifting the car body of (learning all the time). that will give me something to do and another first.

i had a guy her today to give me a quote on painting the inside the engine bay, replacing my a-panels and the little bits and bobs, like inside the boot, the bottom of the doors, under the head lights etc. i did'nt think it would cost so much.

any one interested it helping me nicking some gold bullion.

good point I have done the same, only by doing do you get to know. I think the first step is the biggest leap and follow the manuals etc to make sure you keep everything safe... I do tend to read forums, mags and the original workshop+ haynes manual before making my mind up about things like brakes and upgrades... People like Dean are a god-send very few techies give honest help and not just snippets of info.

very true gr4h4m,
a honest opinion / advice from some one who has got experience and knoledge is a great help. :)

five speed gear box.... is it worth the cash, should they be straight cut etc
what components would be in a realy strong, quick mpi engine
is a 1380 cc engine going to last or should i go gor a 1285 cc :)

i'm saving me pennies

ps m&m's sound good, how do you think they would react to me asking if i could watch them working on me car and asking loads of stupid questions.

John was looking at M&M's for an engine swap the do it same day drive in and out. I'm not sure about watching.

As for the engine choices I'm not sure as I only run a 998, dean might be able to help. I would be looking at the same points as yourself, I would want to ok at reliability and power. Most of the engine suppliers will discuss options with you like Morspeed, MED etc (You should find contact details all over the place, mags etc). I would call a few and also have a word with Dean this should give you a good idea where to spend your money,, top end, bottom end, self build, cooling, oil cooling. You should then have a good idea about the costs, and what you can re-use.
A smaller re-bore would allow or another later down the line.

Someone might be able to recommend a local builder?

There was a good engine build writeup in Mini World. It talks about some of the pitfalls. It also suggested if cash it tight to have a quality bottom end built then use the existing top , upgrading it later as things like the head are bolt-on. It gives you a car that is running in the meantime.

Are you leaving it as an injection or switching to Carbs?

Deano
10-11-2006, 08:12 PM
Engine and gearbox specs are all down to what you need the car to do eg race rally road. 5 speed boxes are very good but when you add up the price of the box etc it`s sometimes cheaper to fit a different engine with 5 speed box as standard like honda vtec`s and suzuki swift etc
I like these mbe 4 speed sequential dog boxes these are the dog dangleys when it come`s to A series gearboxe`s but @£3700 you would expect them to be good:)
A good cam nothing to mad `throttle body `ported head and good engine management will make a mpi go like stink and still be pretty good on fuel and reliable.
Cheers Deano

Where exactly do you live m8? Also let me know when you have all the parts to finish her, that means things like new engine mounts etc etc. And also if you could get hold of an engine crane that would be great, hooking up an injection engine is no big drama, just time consuming! Also you will need an engine stand and a jack!

happy days. :) waiting for the new A.E Pistons, andy recons they are really good quality. the head is going to need some work also. deano has been to see andy and is having a look to see if he can find a suitable replacement andy can use. this will help keep the cost down. thanks very much dean. also thinking of having a centre oil pickup pipe installed while he's there, what do you all think? there is some heat damage on the bulk head and it's gone a bit rusty. andy said i can go up to his premises any time and work on it.... cup of tea and everything, fantastic... not many places would welcome you like that. thanks again dean.... you hope for some good advice when you join a forum like this, but you get so much more from the miniaddicts. i'm not even a signed up member.... yet. :) cheers

thanks guys, i have got so much going on @ the moment. the search for the mpi head is turning into a right drama. i have been looking on ebay... i even concidered buying a whole car of ebay (steve). i then went to chester mini centre (yesturday) and had a chat with brian, who said he new of two mpi engins for sale (aprox £500each) the guy would'nt split the head.... if brian purchased the engine to split, he would want £250 for the head.... hmm, i could get a stage 2 or 3 from mini sport for £350ish. then gr4h4m found a guy on another forum who is selling a mpi head... so i emailed him and i have left a message on his phone. i am waiting to hear from him to respond. if he comes back and all goes well, i am going to give gr4h4m a great big sloppy kiss.... there may even be toungs :p ;) :D watch this space. cheers

Lecy bits are probably because it have been standing a while.. so a clean up with a fiber brush or emery and they should work. The indicator it prob earth...

those 13" wheels eat ball joints... I would recommend Marks method of grinding them in should help them last longer, or the high spots wear then you get slack which speeds up the wear... I would suggest getting extra shims if you order the ball joint kit as you will need them to get it spot on..
