The mini has been wrapped up in the garage for the last 3 months while the weather has been rubbish (yes, yes, I know they should be driven everyday). Just prior to the lay-up, the rad had popped so I had a new one fitted, head skimmed & new gaskets & valve stem oil seals.
The battery went totally flat in-between the head-off repair & being put away, so this weekend, with the first glimmer of sunshine, I put a new battery in & started it up (first time no problems). Reversing out of the garage, it was spluttering & trying to stall...more revs produced a backfire (at least it sounded like a backfire).
The car runs fine in all forward gears as was evident throughout a 20 mile razz around the local country roads, however, still not running at all right in reverse! I'm confuzzled as to what it could be...I'm going to be replacing the HT leads, plugs, rotor arm anyway & probably the coil but has anyone got any ideas as to the cause of this problem???
Gear selection is as it should be, clutch is fine, engine mountings (poly) are all fine, going forwards is all fine (probably needs a proper tune after the work done but I was waiting for the nicer weather).

Cheers, I'll check that at the weekend. The extra engine steady was removed after the head skim so that might make some sense.

Check the wires coming from the reverse light switch on the gear selector to see if they have melted against the exhaust.
When you put it in reverse, the wires short out and provide a drain on the battery...

Time to crawl underneath...
