hi black bug.

1st i think this should have been posted in the electrical section .

2nd i think this definatley has somthing to do with the wiring. I had a similar fauly with mine when fitting the battery for the first time. the positive lead sparked like hell and "somthing" went pop. not sure what yet.

Pretty much yes.

What i would do is to make sure that all the leads are connected in the correct place. Make sure that all leads\wires have a good connection. It could be an earth problem as you have highlighted or an incorrect positive connection (switched around).

I know that there is a general colour rule when it comes to wiring but you also have to remember that since minis are old maybe some of the wires have been replaced or even extended in some cases and what you may thing is an earth may actually be a positive and visa versa.

I always find it useful to have a multimeter with me whenever fiddling with car wiring.

Sounds like bad earth to me clean earth conections they need to be bare metal won't earth thru paint

I would put extra strap on as if had earth cable go and welded the throttle cable together
