My driver window is not winding anymore :( Its been slighly intermittent in the past and now its packed in. By intermittent i mean sometimes when shutting the door, the window has not adjusted itself back up. Open the door and close it again and it adjusts itself. Its happened not long after I had my windscreen replaced, When it was replaced the trim around the inner door was removed to get access to the side of the windscreen, im wondering if it has not been put back on properly and has caused the motor to struggle and burn itself out, dont know.

If I turn the ignition to ignition step 1, the passenger window is fine. The driver window does not move, however I can hear a relay switch clicking somewhere behind the steering wheel near the door, so the centre console switch is ok

Here is what I have tried so far

Banged the door above the speaker (seen quite a few posts when searching the net that this can work sometimes)
Disconnected the battery for 5 mins and reconnected
Swapped the LS and RS fuses over in the passenger fuse box

I think I've checked the basics, is there anything else I need to check? I wont have proper time to check anything until the weekend. I suspect I'm going to have to remove the door panel and have a look inside, of course i know what Im looking for :o

Just out of interest I enquired about the replacement cost of a motor and/or regulator in case they need changing. However it could be something dead simple.

regulator - £83+vat
motor - £109+vat

Do what I did with the wifes car window, jammed a bit of 3x2 inch timber under it and told her to open the passenger window

Cost = nothing

Not sure if this helps, but I pressed the button on the remote to unlock it and the window came down a few cm's. Press it again and it went down a bit more, tried to put it back up and they did not work. Had to turn the car off and on again and then put the window up manually i.e using the switch.

It then went all the way up and then dropped to the normal position.

I think it might be the way you hold your mouth, this happened a few times and then it stopped doing it.

Hope this makes sense!!???

mmm Rob has me thinking. Do minis have a global opening function on the key fob?
I.E on the jag if you hold the open button down and keep it down it will open all of the doors and windows. you can do the opposite with the close button..

If you turn the key to the right on a golf and hold it all the windows and doors open as well

I don't know if anyones interested, but I got this fixed. I found the following article on another forum. Turns out that it is a common fault. Nothing actually "breaks". The motor armature, that recieves power via the carbon brushes in the motor, becomes dirty, and the motor brushes get stuck on a dirty spot. This is why the thumping the door above the speaker trick sometimes works.

However,

I found that I could remove the driver speaker which allowed access to the bolts that held the motor housing in place. I could (eventually) undo these without removing the assembly (or removing the window). :D

I managed to remove the motor by holding down the "window down" switch and shaking the motor housing kind of violently, until it made a contact then the motor wound itself out of the gearbox. I then was able to dismantle the motor and clean the armature.

I re-inserted the motor by holding the worm gear in the gearbox and pressing "window up" until it threaded itself and pulled the motor in.

I then secured it in place, and re-attached the speaker and door panel and there you go, one fixed electric window :)

Yep, but I wonder how many people have actually paid for new motors etc when its actually such a small fault. :(
