My engine sometimes runs on for a second or two if I turn it staight off after a drive. If I let it idle for a few seconds its ok.
Is it the timing or something else

When I first got my first Mini (A 1986 Mayfair:cool: ) it use to run after I turned the igntion off, if i gave it some gas it would go on forever! I can't tell you what caused it, but After I changed the plugs, leads, dizzy and gave everthing a good clean it stopped doing it.

Could be a couple of things most popular is the timing out.
If the head is choked up with carbon it will glow red after use & run on

I would say that it is your timing is to far advanced. Turn the dizzy back a very small and see wot it runs like. Before you turn the dissy mark it with bit of paint so you can turn it back to where it was if you need to.

either that or could be the mix is slightly too rich, or a combination of the two, i'd try the timing first, then the mix

I had a look at the timing tonight and it was set at 16 degrees at 1000 rpm, moved it back to 12 and will give it a run tomorrow to see how it goes
What do you think should be a rough base setting??????
Had to borrow a timing light as I bought a Gunsons one from fleebay in the box a few weeks ago and when I tried it, it was duff
Used a Colour Tune as well to have look in the cylinder at the fuelling and it looked good, nice blue flame when idle turning yellow when revved and straight back to blue when you hold any throttle setting. Has anybody used one before?????

Depends on your engine but would say about 13' BTDC/1000 rpm VD

wouldn't go that far! :D but that sounds about right for setting the mixture, 12-15 is the haynes setting for the timing i think too so you're well within that. hope it goes well mate.
cheers
