Whats the best way to get the bolt undone on the crankshaft pulley?????

I want to fit a new Seal to the timing cover and the rad is out but the bolt is good and tight.

Hi Mate

There are a few different ways some people put them in gear then try it but it puts lots of strain on lots of components.

One other way you can do it which i have done plenty of times without a problem is to take a spark plug out & feed time rope in then turn engine over (by hand) then it locks fine. Unlock by turning the other way. People have said that you could bend a rod or valve but i never have

This is how i do it most of the time you could take the starter motor out and lock the flywheel using an old bearing shell Does the job great:)

I need to do the same for the SC conversion and I was wondering too... is there a lock tab on the nut?do you know what size socket you need?

Does anyone know the size for the crankshaft pulley bolt, as I need to go and buy one from Halfords tomorrow night. I have it at between 34 - 35 mm, but whats that in imperial so I buy the right one????

had a search around and:

1 5/16, also fits hub nut, steering wheel and tower bolts

This is also useful

I hope this helps... as I said this is just from searching the web and not from any book...

metric or not, 34mm socked does the job, and it is the same as your castle nuts on your wheel hubs. just been out and checked it on mine thats in bits.....

Thanks Eric & Graham for your help, I went and bought a 34mm on the way home tonight and it did the job, soon have it back together at the weekend with a new seal in

Jolly good I have a 34mm 6-sided socket, Just need a breaker bar... How did you lock the engine whilst you removed it?

taking the starter motor out and locking the flywheel with either a used shell bearing or something alike ( i used my oil filter puller tool!) something flat that can fit between the teeth on the flywheel and the housing to lock it! then i just put the impact air gun on it and fired away! if you're doing it in-situ with the rad out you should, with an extention bar be able to get an air gun on it through the rad holes in the wing?? that make sense??

Mine only has slots in the wing and I think the subframe will get in the way.. might need to undo the engine mount and jack it up a bit like the miniworld feature.

Rad is out and engine mount is removed and I locked up the flywheel with an old large screwdriver. Hopefully I will have time to replace the seal and put it all back together tomorow.

old bearing shell is great for locking flywheels but if you havent got any about then a big screwdriver is just the ticket;)

Well I have replaced the old oil seal along with a new water pump and thermostat today, but I have decided to replace the rad and hoses while there out as well, so I will get some this week to make sure that the cooling system is in tip top condition
