My charger has got through customs. Should arrive tomorrow.
I've been screwed by parcel farce though! They charged me £13.50 for the privilege of paying VAT on it. Bar stewards!

I just put 12v accross the clutch and it spinds nice and freely, so I'm happy. Cost a fortune, but that's life. I guess I need to start saving for the kit.

A good attempt from scratch.. I admire people who create from scratch its much more difficult to iron out the problems.
I think my insurance went up £80 from standard with all of the mods but then I tell them about everything, wheels, brakes, etc so its not just for the Charger.

Honesty is the best policy where insurance is concerned. They will find the least little excuse not to pay out
I agree...

Steve and I have been paying with Mega-jolt today. I have had some running problems and a few visits to A&B which seems to have been fixed byt re-building the carb with New old stock carb.
I still had an issue with the car stalling when stopping the car from high revs like when coming to a junction or roundabout.
After a few runs with steve in the passenger with my laptop seat and me driving. We have set the advance slightly higher at 700 rpm which fingers crossed seems to just catch the car before it stalls.... Defo something you can do with a dizzy...
Deano

I wouldnt get that problem as the only time it would be under 8000rpm was when i was parking it up lol:p
Glad you got it sorted

Well a bit of an update and quiz..
What different about this carb?
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q18/Mini_Addicts_Gr4H4m/carb1.jpg
also made an all steel jet holder to get rid of that bi-metallic rubbish.
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q18/Mini_Addicts_Gr4H4m/jetholder.jpg
On a side note when was the last time you rebuilt your carb? I have taken three HIF's apart and they needed a good service. The throttle spindles and discs seem ok with hardly any wear but the rubber seals were shot on the spindle. The float needle filter was full of crap and the choke seals were shot.. Also when rebuilding learnt that you must make sure that the float is set at the correct height. With carb upside down and a flat edge across the chamber the cut out in the float should have about 0.5-1mm of space before touching the flat edge... So get them carbs rebuilt...

What different about this carb?
It's in pieces??
How can you get away with rebuilding carbs in the house? My other half would go mental...
Gr4H4m
14-03-2009, 07:39 PM
it is in bits..but thats not the answer...
Just realised that the jet holder it the pics was the prototype, the one in the carb is better made.... Still hasn't made any difference...

Well been having a few issues with carb backfire when starting the engine.
been scratching my head for ages and I have tried loads of things to help sort it but it keeps coming back. Steve popped around last night and over some coffee and some looking, head scratching we come to the conclusion it must be a head problem.
So the head is with Andy at AW engines, very nice bloke. the exhaust valve seats were worn and the valves arnt seating properly. So I have ordered some new guides and Andy is going to re-cut the valve seats and re-lap the valves.....
super.

A Bit of a update I have done a bit more work over the last few months:
On the pics above I have fitted a bike carb so I could get rid of the SU. The reason for change was, the Bike carbs are a much more modern version of the SU and come with some advantages, in my setup:
- It was hard to remove the SU from the supercharger, where the bike carb is held on with a jubilee clip, so its off in a couple of mins.
- The bike carb uses a plastic piston not a metal one.
- Interchangeable jets for idle, 1/4 throttle and Full throttle
- No oil to top up or go thin when it heats up
- No bi-metallic strip that changes the mixture when its hot or cold.
I used a minispares vac take-off plate and Ade sorted me out a small inlet manifold adaptor, at 45deg to keep the float bowls level.
I have used the arm from the HIF so that the throttle movement is the same.
This has seemed to make the car much more mixture stable in hot and cold weather so a bit of a result.
The other mod was to the throttle disc, I have added the poppet valve found in the turbo carb, or the range rover. This is a small valve that relieves the pressure when you let your foot off after heavy acceleration. The car would suffer from stalling at junctions, this was finally traced to the car getting too rich when you let your foot off, as you shut the air off the extra vac caused by the SC pulled more fuel, so it would flood the engine. The poppet valve seemed to have solved this as it opens on heavy vac and lets a bit of air in so the fuel can be used, this allows the revs to drop like a N/A engine.
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q18/Mini_Addicts_Gr4H4m/DSCF4840.jpg
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q18/Mini_Addicts_Gr4H4m/DSCF4841.jpg
To aid in this I have also wired the neg pin of the relay used to turn the SC on to output 1 of the megajolt so that I can control when its switched on and off. The car idle is currently set to 1150-1200rpm and the SC is set to switch on at 1300rpm

Nice project mate. Just bought myself an SC12 to go on a small bore build i'm doing at the moment.
Few questions. What diameter is the bottom pulley, the part of it that runs the charger belt)?
Did you get any issues with overboost at idle and if so how did you overcome them?
And is it possible to either PM, E-mail me or post a clearer pic of the wiring diagram. Its a bit to blurred to read on my computer.
Saw a Video on you tube of what I oresume is your can on the track at the miniworld action day. Got to say it goes well.
Gr4H4m
04-01-2010, 08:00 PM
You dont get boost at idle. It can get very rich on overrun as it pulls fuel as ou snap the throttle shut, hence the poppet valve, but that will depend on the engine as mine pulls a lot of vac, I would guess 998 would be worse than 1275, as they consume more air than the small bore.
I dont know the diameter of the pulley, and its to tight to get a measurement. - Ben might sell you a pulley only not sure.
I dont have a clearer pic of the wiring, thats the only one I have it was a while ago. However when you buy a relay it will also give you the connections if you put that and the diagram on this thread together it will become very clear.
Good luck with your build.

Hi all just making a note of the Winter Upgrades, so if there are any issues I can trace when I made the change.
- Ported head - Turbo Phil - new guides, stainless race valves, MRA top hats. (33, 27.8 custom exhaust valves) pressed steel rockers, new shaft. 1.43mm to block on ex valve.
- Kent 266.
- Oil temp gauge fitted into oil filter housing
- remove fuel filter.
- recirc valve between SC (PCV). all new piping, pneumatic push fit 5mm fittings.
- new choke spring.
- re-designed throttle springs, and cable mount, shorter cable.
- new rubber hose mount for air sock.
- 2 blade fan, mk3 cowl bottom cut away.
- gear linkage re-shimmed and greased, swapped for low wear parts
higher flatter torque curve - 63 ATW.

Have you got a rolling toad graph to show us?

31-03-2010, 09:02 PM
Hi mate its in the garage will dig it out. however more progress..
State of configuration, To be honest its loads more that this but these are the main steps. :)
Setup1 - 62 ATW - Original Dizzy, SU (0deg), Aldon igniter, std cam.
Setup2 - 58 ATW - MJ, Bike carb - Much more stable fuelling, std cam.
Setup3 - 63 ATW - MJ, Bike carb, 266, Turbo Phil head (Valve sizes the same throughout, however using race valves)
Setup4 - 67 ATW - Setup 3 + MJ+3deg. figures at 5800 and still pulling up, rev limiter 6K, power up through the range, good torque curve.
Looking over all my power figures I was making more power from the dizzy setup. So the map was a bit two conservative, Ade upped it 3 deg across the range and power changed a lot it setup 4
Re-Circ valve changed tonight to a solenoid type, to be activated via MJ on VAC conditions.
I think a stronger bottom end and rev to 6500 I think you could see 70ATW. IMO big power from a 998...
Deano

More boost more fuel more revs Thats what you need :p
ben92
01-04-2010, 08:49 AM
What sort of total advance are you running under full load should be around 20 degrees I would have though.
This is my ignition map, it is turbo and intercooled but it has more boost and runs 25degrees oh and E85 fuel which helps alot, but is still fairly conservative.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v668/ben92/fuelmap.jpg
Gr4H4m
01-04-2010, 07:41 PM
well the Lucas 25D had a max advance of 30deg at about 5500-5800 once it was retarded.
Lots of the maps I have found of the Eaton kits seem to run more advance that the turbo maps I have found which doesn't seem normal as the turbo boys have the advantage of an IC to cool the inlet temps.
I dont have the map on this machine.

I put a new set of stickers on the front of the car from Buckley Tyres. It feels like it has power steering now... I've got a bit of toe out looking at the old stuff.. They were also crumbling and cracking, but they have been on the car for a few years...
Which brand and size did you put on? They are really good at Buckley Tyres. Have taken all our cars there for years.

I have put 2 165/70R10 Yoko A008. They had to get them in next day.
P.S. They cant get R pattern tyres.
If you do not mend, how much did those bad boys cost?

09-05-2010, 05:25 AM
What grade oil are you using? I am finding my 998cc is running low on oil pressure once it gets up to running temp. Thinking of installing a oil cooler.
Gr4H4m
09-05-2010, 09:42 AM
20/50 Millers CTV its the best stuff, it holds together at temp and its available from A&B...
You are best to fit an oil temp sender and see what its getting to.
MrDerrickC
09-05-2010, 01:54 PM
Yeah, at the moment I'm am pulling the gearbox apart as 2nd gear syncro is gone. Will put in a oil temp sensor while I'm at it.
What oil pressure are you getting at cold and running temp?
Gr4H4m
09-05-2010, 06:30 PM
well I hit 80 deg today on the motorway sustaining 4K measured at the oil filter. Temp drops driving around town. IMO if your going for a cooler you will need a stat or it will be very cold unless your giving it the beans..
pressure 50 idle hot, foot down hot 75 its always been like that for the last 18 years...
I've got the Halfords stuff in as I couldn't get any CTV but now A&B can get it I shall order some more..

Andy, No2 is for cheats :)
apbellamy
08-02-2011, 07:30 AM
Nothing wrong with cheating :D
Apart from the obvious, what does the anti stall valve do and how does it work?
Gr4H4m
08-02-2011, 09:00 PM
- The second port is fed by a 6mm pneumatic nylon hose to a 12V brass solenoid valve
- From the valve a 6mm pipe is T'd to the boost valve port on the SC to head manifold.
- At 69 kpa the valve is switched open by the megajolt. So at over-run the boost is re-circulated.
now more stalling at when stopping the car. I found that the SC was still drawing fuel out of the carb at over-run. Something your now not going to have to worry about with the "Carb" your thinking of using ;)

on a brighter note:
Well 12 months on the Snowdon Scatter is approaching and the winter upgrades have been completed...
Had some setup work at A&B's completed with the simple Water injection system. used a .70 jet and switched the pump and solinoid on at 5PSI. We stuck some temp strips onto the charger and the inlet manifold:
Charger body temp
No-WI = 40C
WI = 34C
Inlet manifold body temp (After Charger)
No WI = 62C!
WI = 45C
I know it would be better to have a temp sender but I dont have a boss in my manifold so the sticky things was the best we could do.
I haven't changed the map advance to take advantage of the inlet temp and I'm using straight water.
A good days work.
Excellent work, better you are well pleased with your winter work.

Well I went for a spin today with rob and the new drive shaft joints that I put on in jan shattered when pulling away from the lights...... So will go back to the rubber joints rather than the qh roller bearing joints. The parts quality these days just don't sem to be up to the job...
Thank god that it never went on the a55 whe we were doing soem speed
In the words of Graham all I can say is "unbelievable!!!" Shocking how parts are not up to the job these days!!!
I would recommend any mini driver to get themselves covered by the AA, Greenflag or RAC as even when you look after your car and add what the manufactures say are better quality parts, things can and will go wrong.
Hope you are not up to late trying to fix this, especially after fixing the rattle and wobble after first owning the mini.

21-05-2011, 08:45 PM
Parts already ordered from minispares, going back to h rubber cross joints, I dont think the nylon I man enough fro he job seems too britle
That was quick!! seems to be the case that they are just not up to it and the bits on the Posthouse roundabout are testament to that!!!;)

I was having an issue with heat. Bu the two fans and the two core were doing a good job. But I I was loosing coolant and it was a becoming difficult to start.
However it still went well.
Anyway a new performance gasket is on the way and a new stud kit as the old one had some damage to the treads.

I cant remember TBH.. On the old motorway the larger tank was only about 120miles before I started to worry... But the car does much better on the lanes. I will have to drive faster to make sure we can make a petrol stop :)
