As a caravanner I can tell you that, the guide is the trailer should be no more than 85% of the laden weight of the car.
If you are thinking of the Elf, the handbook gives 8cwt as max towing weight (or 406.5k.g) and I think that means a braked trailer although don't quote me on that.
Haynes Manual gives saloon max tow weight as 896 lbs (404kg)
and estate/van and pickup as 672 lbs (303kg)
and whilst on subject the max weight on tow ball is 100 lbs (45kg) roof rack max wt 90 lbs (40kg) I think that is a rack that sits on rubber suckers . you may get away with more weight on the gutter as it is not advisable to put anything on the roof as it will dent very easily.
If you would like any more info just ask.
I understand that the EU have banned tow bars being made for classic minis registered after 1989 (I cannot be to sure of the year but think it is 1989)

85% of car laden weight appleis to braked caravans & trailers. I've really had to dig to find something on unbraked trailers. Caravan clubs don't seem to bother with it. Trailer manufacturers just tell you to check the VIN plate but only modern cars have this info on VIN plates. Finally managed to find something at the Dept of Transport which recommends a max of 50% laden weight for unbraked trailers. A Haynes toweing guide gives the same advice. I think that would equate to about 350kg for a mini saloon.
