you are locking them with the flat head screw? and the other end is on the post I would take everything out and re-install the flat head should hold them\in place once you have set the gap

Looking back at your recent posts, I notice your boss says you need a new dizzy? makes me think that the centre spindle with the cam on is loose?
If thats the case then your points will be at various gaps? This can play havoc with the running in general and wear the cam follower on the points.
If you can move the spindle from side to side then I would consider replacing the dizzy.
As a general rule of thumb. as Graham says set the points right on the top of the cam (spot on top) with the screws just tight enough to hold them in place. Put car in fourth, handbrake off, push back or forth slowly untill you reach next cam.measure points gap, repeat with other two cams. If all are same(14-16 th---0.35-0.40mm) anything bigger will advance the timing slightly and below will retard it. Tighten up the two screws and check again
If you find the gaps all different then a change of dizzy is the way to go.
Obviously whatever the out come let us know.
after 50 or 100 miles check again and re-adjust (the cam follower on the points may have had the high spot worn off by then as they often do.)

still the same an hav changed the dizzy and pointsso i have no idea wot is wrong with it

are u on about that u changed the dizzy cap or the whole distributor as if your just changing the cap an its the rotor arm which is playing havoc with the point closing then best swopping the whole dizzy instead of the cap, and pm dan storz on mnr he maybe able to help with the dizzy

A worn dizzy cap can cause the performance as the spark has to jump a bigger gap and again those gaps would be different if centre shaft is worn.
It does sound to me that the base plate of the points may not be sitting correctly and therefore the two securing screws are coming loose?
Have you got spring washers on these screws? If not then they will will come loose, (probably not as much that you would notice) Keep at it, you will get there in the end!

All thats left to ask is . Are they the right points ie lucas for a lucas distributer? Are they the same as the ones you took off in the first place ? if so are they sitting on base plate right (dead flat that is?) It's got to be something simple. Is there no one you can ask locally who may know something about points? they may just notice something you must have missed? Make sure the cam follower is not worn and there is just a touch of grease on the spindle to help the cam follower.

I am awfully glad for you M8 as I couldn't think of anymore points to suggest if you pardon the pun.Did M & M's give you any indication of what it was?
