I've been having a few problems with the fan on front of the radiator for a few months now, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes its on all the time, I Eventually took it to the local garage the electrician there just said the fuse was the wrong size and put a bigger one in (It didn't sound like a good idea to me but I'm no electrician) now its stopped all together, which wasn't a problem as its been quite cool, until this weekend, it over heated on Friday and today spilling all the water all over the road, this i could understand if it had happened in a Que or on a long journey but i was only going two or three miles and had very little time standing still! Any suggestions/offers of help would be much appreciated as I'm not bad with mechanics but haven't got much experience with the electrical side of things:o As i said any help is welcome:D The offending Mini is a 1997 Mini Cooper 1.3 mpi.

a bit simple I know but have you checked the fuses.??? Do you have a meter to check the voltage going to the fan???

have you checked the temp controlled switch which controls the fan? if that is ok you might need to check that the cooling system is not pressurised by a head hasket leak!!

I Checked the fuse's and theres no problem there, i don't have a volt meter so i cant check the voltage, but hopefully i can borrow one from a guy from work, but as i sprained my ankle on Sunday i wont get it till next week. Anyway thanks for the advice and i will keep you informed.;)

Ok so i replaced the fan (which had seized) and it still didn't work! so i traced all the wire's and found no faults. I then crossed the wires leading to the temp switch(Engine Management Sensor to give it its full title) that is housed in the thermostat block, and the fan works! I then had to leave it so i could go on a run.:D I got a new switch, put it in and nothing, I replaced that one ( thinking it might be faulty) and still nothing. If theres no faults in the wiring, the fuses are ok, and the fan comes on when i cross the wires its got to be the switch right?:o Any idea's I'm all out!

The fan used to come on when the temp gauge got to just below half but now it just overheats.

I put a new one in whern i had the car (about 18 months ago) and i took it out and tested it and it works ok.

Thanks for the suggestions but im at a loss!!!:(

If the stat is working, get your cooling system pressure tested, just in case the haed gasket is leaking causing an air lock at the thermostat. If that's ok, you will need a genuine fan switch which is guaranteed.
