Hello and welocme to the forum:) Snowdon mini`s are like family to us :)

It could be a number a different things

Battery condition correct bat size ampage etc

Alternator correct ampage pulley size etc

Dodgy wiring

I would start with battery get it tested or get a new one then the alternator

Hope this helps any more suggestions peeps? let us know how you get on

Cheers Deano

hi dawn! welcome to the forum! think deano has covered pretty much everything there! another dead obvious one thats not as technical is - have you got a weather sheild over your dizzy? and checked that the dizzy cap seals over the dizzy properly, sure ian was having problems with damp getting in his cap and made mini mini run like spanners!
hope you get it sussed soon tho!
cheers

Hi Dawn.Welcome to miniaddicts!
It looks to me that your lights may have a dodgy earth wire some where if it only happens when you put lights on? It could be a dodgy bulb? or even a bare wire touching earth somewhere but that is more likely to blow a fuse.
hope you sort it soon before it gets worse.

Should be no probs, as long as you connect correctly +or - and of course it's a 12 volt battery. Good luck with that, remember you are only doing what a garage would do, short of sending a pulse through the wires with a meter, and who pays for that! Might as well go for it yourself (experience comes in handy if you are ever stuck in middle of no where !:D

As Dean says in his reply as long as your ampage is correct should be ok. I doubt the battery will fit in the mini's battery box. I bought a new one for my mini not long ago from a motor factor for £23 so they are cheap enough to buy!
