Well not sure if this is the correct place to put this thread but......
I wanted some big brakes on my car to go with my mild tuning, I had some ideas in my head but wanted to keep the 10 inch wheel. Anyway I was looking at the Fiesta Brake Upgrade but didn't want to undertake it... in Steps Mark Rally who did.... We are creating a full guide, Mark is supplying the brains and the know how + doing all of the work.. I kinda stand around help out where I can and make the movie......
Whilst we are in mid project I have created a little trailer… The full project is moving along and we should be able to post a full how to style guide including re-building mini hubs….. (The donor set I had we could undo the castle nut by hand and the lad who sold them to me said they were ready to stick on the car  ……)

the link should work now..... I did the same over a set of KAD four pots.... this seems a much more wife friendly conversion.
It also has the following technical advantages a larger pad area and you should get a better pedal feel with the fiesta single pot 48mm piston rather than four pistons circa 35mm each looking at Marks.... so more Mini master cylinder friendly.

- DISCLAIMER -
Before we start this thread is talking about changing your brakes, Death and injury may result if you don't fit car parts correctly or you take shortcuts... You should seek professional advice before undertaking any work on your car.
Background
The parts list. We have decided to completely refurb the hubs as they were secondhand and if you are going to strip everything down then provide the car with more breaking force its best to have everything in tip top condition. Its best to factor in these costs when considering an upgrade.
So Why Do it
The upgrade can be for people who have drums all round and want discs but want to keep the 10inch wheel -Me:) or people who have a 12inch or larger wheel and think that smaller is better:D and are looking for the retro 10 inch look.
Its cheaper than a Cooper S 7.5 inch kit which are about £500.
Its cheaper than the 7.9inch 4 pots as these are about £400-£500 once you have factored in the hoses, hubs (if you are doing the conversion form drums)
The Mk2 Fiesta calipers use a larger pad than the mini, you can use the 7.9inch disc and the single pot caliper design means the pedal should be high and firm as you will need to move less fluid. All this should add up to a good fade resistant braking system. + you won't need to adjust the front's like you do with Drums. The Ford kit is well proven and the old grotty caliper I got at first still moved on its slide by hand so they should resist sticking.
Donor Parts (Second Hand)
- Mini Brake Disc hubs (Expect to pay about £50 with drive shafts)
- Fiesta Mk2 calipers and carriers - The carries are the most important part as you can buy new calipers just not the carrier.
New Parts
- Drive shaft Clips
- Wheel Bearings (there a lot of info on what type Timkin or std)
- Ball joints and new grease nipples
- Cv gaiter (Cheap and you might split the exisiting one)
- Custom hoses with Fiesta metric connection one end and mini subframe on the other)
- The Fiesta calipers I have are not in bad condition but as the car stands between meetings I'm going for refurb units
- Fiesta Pads, Lots of talk about what is best... remember a super fast road style pad will need heat in it to work so its best to pick one for the way you drive. We are going to try a good quality road pad.
- Drive Flanges off of an MG Metro Turbo or vented disc metro. This is to give you the clearance to bolt the Fiesta caliper on.
- 8.4 inch discs turned and have them turned down to 7.9inch or about 6mm off of the radius.
- Brake fluid.
- Longer high tensile metric bolts to hold the front calipers on as the Ford ones are too short - THESE MUST BE HIGH TENSILE.
- New larger disc master cylinder
Drum upgrade Parts
- New inbound rubber drive couplings and u bolts, if fitted
- A 1inch rear wheel spacer kit either the 1275 drum type on post 84 mini's or a 1inch spacer both will need longer wheel studs. This is because the discs on the front will push the wheels out so you need to bring the rear wheels in-line.
- Wheel arches if you don't have them as the wheel will stick out further
- you might need small rear wheel cylinders if you don't have the limiting valve on the rear sub frame, you don't want the rears locking before the front.
12" wheels to 10" upgrade / downgrade
- 10 Inch wheels, I don't think that mamba's or steel will work.
This is the first Draft so I might have missed something... Mark please add anything...

The hubs, caliper brackets, track rod ends and steering arms have been degreased and then wizz'd with a wire brush drill attachment and then wiped down and painted black. They look much better now.:D

Another day at Marks and the hubs have been recon'd with new bearings, and ball joints.
Both hubs have been built up with the drive flanges, discs, calipers etc... all I can say the caliper and pad size against the overall size of the disc looks massive, you couldn't get anymore under 10" rims.... Can't wait to see what they are like.:D

From what I have read its about the same clearance as the four pot kit but the advantage of 1 pot:D

someone is selling a metro 4pot kit on the mini forum so I have borrowed the pic, the difference in the pad area is a bit of a shock, the discs are standard 8.4 so are 6 mm wider on the radius than the Fiesta conversion so wont fit under 10" rims.
P.s the guy wants £80 if anyone is interested (Only fair to give him a plug for using the pic)

Well it just so happens Mark did some research into it.... we tested some XR2 stuff that I had, the mounting holes are the same distance but it needed vented discs (19.9mm wide) I also remember something about the caliper spacing.... but I have slept since then....
On another note, Marks big brake kit is going to be the one to have under 13's.......... MASSSSSIIIIVVVEEE discs.... but more machining work required.

Well we completed the installation today and what a difference....
Before I go on I would like to say an big thanks to MARK for a top job.
Whilst we were converting the brakes we changed the bottom arm bushes and tie bar's and tie bar bushes. I got competition rubber ones from Mini spares. The car now feels bang on the turn in is bang on I have the mini handling back as I remember it!!!
Right the brakes. We have put new old stock original Minifins on the back and a 1 " spacer installed by the special Sunday afternoon hole technique soon to be patented. The front calipers, pads, discs, front bearings, bushes, front hoses and Minifins are new and the rear wheel cylinders + master cylinder are about 8 months old. So its far to say its in tip top condition not just pulled off of a scrappy. The reason I'm saying this, is you need to keep it in mind when comparing the brakes. I will try and dig the prices out but I think I have spent about £350. You can do it a lot cheaper if all of the parts weren't new; some people have done it for about £100.
Ok the old Drums -
They were all recon'd and in good condition with new shoes, wheel cylinders, etc. I can describe them as on or off braking; the pedal was solid with very little movement but once it was hard it didn't seem to matter how hard you pushed it from that point it weren't going to stop any quicker, this was less noticeable at low town speeds more at high speed (well about 60 in my beast :-) ) They couldn't be described as confident but they would stop the car.
The 1 POT solution -
This is so different the pedal has a little more movement before it gets rock solid but there is a stage where the bakes are engaged after the initial pedal movement but not full on.. apply more pressure and you get some real stopping power. I never understood what brake feel was before this as the drums were on off and modern cars are very over servo'd. It gives an amount of control I never had before. The rear shoes and front pads are still bedding in but I went for a couple of tests at a industrial estate and they nearly popped my eyes out. The control I was talking about allows you to just let a bit of pressure off as the wheels start to skid. I did a couple of stops and there was no sign of the dreaded fade. I would also say that you don't need as much leg pressure as you do with drums, I would try to explain why but I think both Mark and my wife would shoot me.
Overall a BIG improvement not only in braking but as we had everything apart and changed the bushes the cars handling is now very sharp. A* I can highly recommend them to anyone thinking of upgrading
P.S will finish editing the vid and get it up ASAP... watch this space.

No the steels won't clear without some sort of spacer due to the construction.
Mark rally made mine from fittings and hose bought from deamon tweaks... I think rally designs will make some up have a google.

Rally Design did my hoses for my Fiesta Brake conversion for £22, they did give me a code number in case I wanted to order more but I can't find it but if you contact them and say that they made a set for Neil Gavin in North Wales they should be able to send the same out for you, top quality hoses (Goodrich) and an excellent 2 day turn around, highly recomended
